Ballard Orchestra
Audition Information
SPRING 2019 

Concert Orchestra – There is no audition necessary to enroll in the Concert Orchestra. All incoming students are automatically placed into this class. 

Symphonic Orchestra – Open to freshmen by audition only. If you plan to audition, email Ms. Fortune at eafortune@seattleschools.org to sign up for a time slot on June 18 and 20 after school from 3:45-5:45 PM. 

Current Symphonic Orchestra Non-Seniors: your auditions will occur during class time starting on June 17. 

  • Prepare a 3-octave major scale at the tempo and bowing of your choice: G-major for violins, C-major for violas and celli. 
  • Basses only – Prepare a 2 octave G-major scale at the tempo and bowing of your choice 
  • Prepare an excerpt of a performance piece (solo, NOT orchestra music) that shows your proficiency (is a challenge). I will ask you to play for approx. 2 minutes. 
  • I will provide a sight-reading exercise for you. 
  • I will be scoring you on your ability to use vibrato and your proficiency in upper positions. Even if you are unsure about your vibrato abilities, please show me that you are trying, and experimenting with vibrato. 

Chamber Orchestra – Open to Freshmen by audition only. If you plan to audition, email Ms. Fortune at eafortune@seattleschools.org to sign up for a time slot on June 18, and 20 afterschool from 3:45-5:45 PM. 

VIOLIN

1. Three octave A Major scale: Sixteenth notes ascending and descending, slur eight notes per bow. Quarter note = 108
2. Three octave A melodic minor scale: Sixteenth notes ascending and descending, detache’. Quarter note = 92
3. Mendelssohn: Symphony #4 – 1st mvt: meas. 1-28. Dotted quarter note = 132
4. I will provide a sight-reading exercise for you.
5. Identify and play a one-minute excerpt from your solo literature. 

VIOLA

1. Three octave D Major scale: Sixteenth notes ascending and descending, slur eight notes per bow. Quarter note = 108
2. Three octave D melodic minor scale: Sixteenth notes ascending and descending, detache’. Quarter note = 92
3. Beethoven: Symphony #5, 2nd mvt: meas.1-11. Eighth note = 92
4. I will provide a sight-reading exercise for you.
5. Identify and play a one-minute excerpt from your solo literature. 

CELLO

1. Three octave D Major scale: Sixteenth notes ascending and descending, slur eight notes per bow. Quarter note = 88
2. Three octave E melodic minor scale: Sixteenth notes ascending and descending, detache’. Quarter note = 72
3. Beethoven: Symphony #5, 2nd mvt: meas. 1-11. Eighth note= 92

5. Identify and play a one-minute excerpt from your solo literature.  

STRING BASS 

1. Two octave F Major scale: Sixteenth notes ascending and descending, slur four notes per bow. Quarter note = 88
2. Two octave E melodic minor scale: Sixteenth notes ascending and descending, detache’. Quarter note = 72
3. Beethoven: Symphony #5 – 3rd mvt: meas. 140-165. Dotted half note = 84
4. I will provide a sight-reading exercise for you.
5. Identify and play a one-minute excerpt from your solo literature. 


*Please note that acceptance into Chamber Orchestra as a Freshman is more the exception than the rule. Most incoming Freshmen will be placed in Concert and Symphonic Orchestra.
 

Fiddle Ensemble – Auditions will occur during the first week of school in September. Positions are available for students of all orchestra ensembles. Contact Ms. Fortune at eafortune@seattleschools.org for more information. Fiddle Ensemble is an extra-curricular ensemble, that currently meets on Monday evenings from 6:00 - 7:30 pm.
