The Ballard High School Music & Drama Department is lauded throughout the Northwest and beyond for its high level of musical and performance excellence. Ballard provides one of the most complete high school music programs in Seattle - offering instruction in voice, wind and string instruments spanning jazz to classical. The Drama Program consistently presents best-in-class plays and musicals, and participated in the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

Calling All Dessert Bakers

Dessert Dash - August 27th 

On August 27th, the BHS Foundation will hold the Dinner of Champions in conjunction with the 17th Annual Ballard High School Golf Classic. This event raises money for BHS Athletics and Music. (Approximately $5000 for Performing Arts!) We need 40 dessert bakers to commit and deliver their desserts to Carol Knoph (BHS parent) before Sunday, August 27th by 10:00 AM. Sign up below and Carol will send you drop off instructions . At an average of $125 per dessert it's worth turning on the oven for Ballard Performing Arts! We know a lot of families will be vacationing, so if you can make two things, all the better. Please contact Carol Knoph  if you have any questions. Thank you!!!!

Fitting Day Tips!
-Bring your patience 

-Please consider wearing leggings or shorts for ease, speed and modesty. Dressing rooms will be available but may cause additional wait time.

-Incoming students please consider bringing a snack. Orientation and fitting can be a long day.

(Concert Tuxes will be fitted after school on Sept 11th and 12th)

An army of volunteers is needed for Uniform Fitting Days! We need lots of hands on deck to help students find their correct sizes and make this a speedy process. This is a fun time to reconnect with students and parents. Please sign up below. Student help is welcome!

Chaperones Needed

Spend a Weekend at Music Camp!

Help us get ahead of the game by signing up to chaperone at your student's music camp this fall! Take it from your newsletter editor, this is an easy and fun gig!  Chaperones attend for no cost and are needed for all camps.  You will be surrounded by beautiful music, beautiful scenery and meet loads of other parents. Your only real job is to is to be present and make sure students are in their cabins by curfew at night. Camp begins on Friday afternoon after school. Please contact your rep to let them know you plan to chaperone at camp this fall:

Marching Band Students are required to purchase ASB Cards at the beginning of the school year.  They can be purchased with the school’s fiscal secretary and cost $35 each.

Mark Your Calendars for 2017 - 2018

The Ballard Bands have some exciting activities planned for the 2017-2018 school year.  Parents and guardians, please mark your calendars now. The appropriate paperwork and payment information was sent home with your musician last week and is also available online - see links below:

Band Camp at Camp Seymour 
This is a REQUIRED activity for all members of the Ballard Marching Band. Held the first weekend after school resumes, Sept 8-10, the $165 payment and paperwork are due July 1, 2017!  See Payment Details in the Fall Camps Section above.  If you need partial financial assistance, please complete the scholarship form and return it by June 30, 2017.
 
If you would like to chaperone at no cost, please contact Band Rep Jen Witeck. With over 160 students in the marching band on this overnight excursion, we need 8 female and 8 male volunteers.

Con Brio Music Festival - Whistler B.C. - Paperwork Due Now
The Wind Ensemble will travel to beautiful British Columbia to participate in the Con Brio Music Festival April 19-22, 2018!  While the final cost is still to be determined, we anticipate a cost of approximately $500 per student.  The package includes round-trip bus transportation, three nights lodging, hot breakfasts, group dinners, a student welcome reception, a ride on a cable car, scavenger hunt, and of course, the music festival workshops and performances.  

Registration and Fees Due July 1, 2017!

With over 4,000 musicians in attendance, the registration form and initial deposit of $150 are due on July 1, 2017 in order to secure our lodging preference and restaurant reservations.  Payments may be paid via cash, check or online via credit card for a small additional processing fee. Again, please complete a scholarship form if you are in need of partial financial assistance. Registration and/or check should be mailed to BPA, PO Box 17774, Seattle, WA  98127
 
Parents and guardians, if you would like to chaperone, the anticipated cost is $425 with an initial $150 deposit due on July 1, 2017.  We need 4 female and 4 male chaperones. Please contact Band Rep Jen Witeck if you would like to volunteer or have any questions about the trip.  

Husky Band Day
Let's Go Band!  We are excited to once again participate in the Husky Band Day on September 16th.  Stay tuned for more details on this event as the date approaches!  We also need 10-12 chaperones to volunteer. Please contact Band Rep Jen Witeck. Thank you!

WMEA Conference "Concert Hour" Performance
The Wind Ensemble's invitation to perform at the WMEA Conference in Yakima on February 16, 2018 is truly an honor.  Selected based upon a submission of their April 2017 Carnegie Hall concert, The Wind Ensemble will entertain music directors and educators from around the state during the coveted "Concert Hour" time slot.  More details will to follow in the fall, including information on an overnight stay the evening prior to the performance.


Chamber Orchestra to NYC  - Deposit Due!

New and returning Chamber Orchestra members - Congratulations and keep reading!


Chamber Orchestra is going to New York City next March 1-4, to compete in the National Orchestra Cup! They will perform in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the performance venue of the New York Philharmonic on Saturday, March 3rd. 

In order to reserve competitive airfare, and our spot in the competition, we are asking for a deposit of $500, due by July 1st 2017. Make your online payment here . 

The trip, is estimated to cost approximately $1,800 per student. The Ballard Performing Arts Boosters have a mission to help support our students in their performance opportunities that include travel, and we will continue to offer student fundraisers beginning in the fall. 

Attention Parents and Guardians: if you are interested in chaperoning the NYC trip, we will be looking for up to four parents to join us in New York City.  Please contact Orchestra Parent Representative, Sylvia Schweinberger, if you are interested. 




Dinner of Champions
August 27th at the Newscastle Golf Club

BPA is providing desserts for the Dessert Dash at the Dinner of Champions on August 27th.
 
We're planning now for the 6th Annual Dinner of Champions on Sunday, August 27 followed by the 17th Annual Ballard Foundation Golf Classic on Monday, Aug 28. Both events are presented by The Ballard High School Foundation. The money raised at these events over the past 16 years has already provided over $1,000,000 to our Ballard High School Sports and Performing Arts Programs.
 
Ballard Performing Arts is participating by donating 40 desserts for the Dessert Dash portion of the Dinner of Champions, August 27 at 4:00 pm at The Golf Club at Newcastle.This is an easy way for BPA to participate in this exciting "fun" raiser. Drop off your dessert or arrange pick up in NW Seattle and it will be delivered to Newcastle for you!  Please consider helping support this fundraiser. Mark your calendars and sign up today!

Spring Concert Recap
 
From Mingus and Sousa to Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, last week's band concert was spectacular! Congratulations to all of our wonderful performing groups. Thank you Mr. James, Mr. Weed and Mr. Carter. There were touching tributes to Mr. James from his seniors and he recognized each with a rose. The Spring Concert series makes us realize how much these groups have grown and shared over the years. Great memories on all sides. Farewell to our seniors who will go out and make music in the world. The following students earned awards this year:

As always, please do not to share or trade the files.

Congratulations to Orchestra Director, Brittany Newell and Fiddle Ensemble Director, Shelley Weiss and all performing groups for a wonderful and inspiring concert last Thursday evening. The Concertos were beautiful and our soloists amazing!  We are proud of all our Seniors and wish them well on their next journey. The following Seniors received awards at last Thursday's concert:

Choir placement auditions for most choirs have taken place. If you know of any students who are not currently enrolled in choir but would like to be next year, please have them email Ms. Rowley  to set up an audition time!  Audition information can be found here.

Recordings Available
Winter Concert music files are online. Inside each Band, Choir or Orchestra folder are folders with each group's songs and each Mozart's Requiem in both WAV and MP3 formats. Use WAV files to burn CDs, MP3s to download to iPods and similar devices. MP3s will show up in alphabetical order, but they have track numbers embedded in them, and should sort themselves into performance order once they're in iTunes or some similar program.

Please respect the composers' copyright and do not share with anyone outside of your ensemble except for the Requiem. Mozart's copyright has expired.

Enjoy the music at home
 to open a folder called "Ballard Fall 2016."  Inside are separate folders for band, choir and orchestra, and inside each of those are folders for .WAV files and MP3 files.   Download .WAV files if you want to burn your own CDs. If you have trouble downloading the .WAV files please contact Diane Taylor for assistance. Download MP3 files if you are using a device like an iPad or an iPhone.  The MP3 files will appear in alphabetical order, but the track numbers are embedded, so when they are downloaded into iTunes as an album, they should arrange themselves in the proper order.  

MP3 files are for listening.  WAV files must be downloaded to your computer and are for burning CDs


Please respect the copyright on this music, do not share it with students who are not in our music program or upload it anywhere else on the web.  The copyright act allows "One archive or study recording" per musician.
